885,458. Electronic counting-apparatus. PYE Ltd. April 19, 1960 [April 20, 1959], No. 13402/59. Class 106 (1). [Also in Group XL (c)] An electronic counter comprising a plurality of separate cold cathode tubes also includes an additional cold cathode tube which is connected so that it strikes upon switching on the circuit and thereby ensures that all other tubes are non-conducting, and a particular tube is primed to be the first to operate upon receipt of a counting pulse. A bi-stable circuit comprising cold cathode valves V1, V2 has a third valve V3 connected in parallel with V1. The trigger electrode of this valve is taken to a tapping point on a potential divider R5, R6 across the H.T. supply, so that on switching on the trigger potential is sufficient to cause V3 to strike and thus ensure that the initial output is that from R2, giving a " 0 " output. In operation, counting pulses cause V2, V1 to strike alternately to give either a " 1 " or a " 0 " output from R2<SP>1</SP> or R2 respectively, and the circuit can be reset to " 0 " at any time by applying a reset pulse to the trigger of V3. A ring counter may be used in place of a bi-stable circuit.
