Abstract

884,981. Making heat-exchanger tubes and nuclear fuel elements; drilling. FAIREY CO. Ltd. Feb. 11, 1959 [Nov. 11, 1957], No. 35129/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (3). [Also in Group XIII] A finned tube for use as a heat-exchanger of a can for a nuclear fuel rod is formed from an alloy tube having integral longitudinal fins 11, 11A and helical fins 12 which protrude radially further than the fins 11, 11A. The helical fins fit into keyhole slots 13, 13A in the longitudinal fins and are welded to the tube either at each end or centrally. To cut the enlarged portion at the base of the slots a cable 20A having a cutting head 21A is rotated whilst drawing the head through the base of the slots. A guide fits into the slots to support the cable and guide the head. In a modification the integral fins are helical and longitudinal fins are slotted into the integral fins. The enlargement at the base of the slots is then formed by a drill 32 having a long shank 31, a guide 35 being employed. Specification 884,980 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification, 816,124.
