Abstract

Thoria aquasols containing at least 50% by weight of thorium dioxide in the form of particles having average diameters from 10 to 100 millimicrons, and stabilized with a monovalent acid to a pH of 2 to 5, are prepared by adding a soluble thorium salt and an anion exchange resin to a heated colloidal solution of thorium hydroxide seed particles. The initial sol is obtained by adding anion exchange resin to a solution of thorium salt, and then a solution of thorium salt is added at a rate not exceeding 1 millimole of salt per hour per 10 square meters of colloidal thoria surface area in the sol, together with an anion exchange resin at a rate to maintain the pH between 2 and 5, the temperature being above 80 DEG C. and electrolyte level below 0,2 molar, the additions being continued until the colloidal thoria particles have grown to 10 to 100 millimicrons. The sol may be concentrated by evaporation, anion exchange resin being added to maintain the pH between 2 and 5. Examples are given.
