Abstract

884,953. Vehicle bumpers. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. July 8, 1960 [Aug. 12, 1959], No. 23909/60. Class 103(2). [Also in Group XXXIV] An energy absorbing device (see Group XXXIV) for use as a vehicle bumper comprises a tube of ductile material each end of which is connected to one of a pair of thrust-transmitting members such that relative movement of the thrust-transmitting member axially of the tube bends the tube inside out over at least part of its length. A pair of energy absorbing devices 5 are attached to a vehicle frame 1 (Fig. 1) and thrust-transmitting rods 10 are attached to a conventional bumper 4. The energy absorbing devices 5 each comprise a tube 6 of ductile material of constant circular cross section secured at one end to a hollow thrust-transmitting member 5 welded to cross brace 3 of vehicle frame 1. The other end of tube 6 is formed with an internal radial flange 7 and a plate 8 welded thereto. In the event of an impact shock such as from a vehicle collision, each thrust-transmitting rod 10 is progressively moved within the tube 6 and both the rod and the tube are received within the member 1 to deform the tube from the shape shown in Fig. 2 to the shape shown in Fig. 3, thereby to dissipate the kinetic energy.
