Abstract
884,447. Metals cutting and working; altering physical properties; welding by fusion. BLECHNER, H. Jan. 3, 1958 [Jan. 4, 1957; Jan. 12, 1957], No. 22514/61. Divided out of 884,446. Drawings to Specification. Class 83 (4). A method of working metal comprises heating the metal to above the critical temperature or to above the melting point by friction caused by rapid relative rotation between the metal and a tool, the tool being a steel disc having a bevelled edge. The tool may have a smooth, ground, polished or honed working surface and may rotate at a peripheral speed of 80 m./sec. The process may be used to cut and heat-treat the metal at the same time or may be used to weld two pieces of metal together.
