Abstract

Carbon or graphite bodies are joined together or to metal bodies by means of a cement comprising a heat-swellable graphite compound which is then heated. The cement may contain pitch tar, phenol resin or alkali silicate as cokable binder and graphite, anthracite and metal as filler. The graphite compound may be graphitic acid or an ester or salt thereof, graphitic oxide or a halogen-containing graphitic compound.ALSO:A jointing cement which swells on heating and is used for joining carbon or graphite bodies together or with metal parts contains graphite compounds or derivatives such as graphitic acid, graphitic oxide, halogen derivatives, metal salts of graphitic acid or graphitic esters. The graphite compounds may be mixed with fillers such as graphite, carbon, metal powder or degassed anthracite and binders such as pitch, tar or phenol resins which coke on heating or with alkaline silicates. The cement may be applied by spreading it on the surfaces to be joined or as granules or prefabricated pieces.
