Abstract

Acid-precipitated, finely-divided, filterable silica containing cationic impurities is purified by adding a small amount, e.g. 0,02 to 0,5 grms/litre, of a metal or ammonium salt to an aqueous slurry of the silica and treating the slurry with an ion exchange resin, preferably in amount sufficient to reduce the pH of the slurry to below 6, e.g. 2-4. Salts may be K2SO4, KNO3, KBr, NaNO3, Na2SO4, NaCl, Na oxalate, Na acetate, NH4Cl, (NH4)2SO4, BaCl2, BaSO4, CaSO4, CaCl2, AlCl3, AlF3, Al2(SO4)3, Al acetate, MgSO4, MgCl2, or MgBr2. The silica may be prepared from alkali metal silicate and at least a stoichiometric amount of a weak acid having a dissociation constant below 1 X 10-4 for the first H and gaseous in the anhydrous state, e.g. CO2, SO2, or H2S. The precipitated SiO2 flocs, having a surface area 25-400 sq. m./grm., and actual particle size 0,1-10m , and containing at least 90% SiO2 on the anhydrous basis, are filtered off and washed to yield a filter cake containing 12-20% solids. This filter cake after addition of the salt, is mixed with granular, e.g. 10-100 mesh, iron exchange resin, in amount at least 1 lb. resin/lb. SiO2 and water, if necessary, to maintain not less than 12% SiO2 in the slurry. Resins may be sulphonated polystyrene, styrene-vinyl benzene copolymer, phenol-formaldehyde resin, lignin, or peat, or amino resins. The mixture of slurry and resin is allowed to stand with agitation, and the resin is separated by settling, decantation, or centrifuging, or a combination of these separations. Preferably, a portion of the silica slurry is separated from the resin and then the remainder, e.g. 0,25-25%, is separated. The silica may be stabilized before the resin treatment by heating in an aqueous medium at above 60 DEG C. for at least 30 mins., or by drying at 100 DEG C. or above, e.g. 120 DEG -300 DEG C. for 10 secs.-25 mins. and then redispersing. Specification 774,586 is referred to.
