Abstract

883,439. Waveguides. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Aug. 26, 1958 [Sept. 16, 1957], No. 27341/58. Class 40(8). A system for transmitting the TE 01 circular electric mode has means for coupling the mode from a first section 31 of circular waveguide to a second section 32 of circular waveguide having a smaller diameter with minimum mode conversion and filtering of spurious non-circular modes, comprising a conical tapered section formed by winding an elongated conductor 24 into a helix with adjacent turns 25, 26 spaced apart, and a jacket 28 of electrically dissipative material surrounding the helix. The turns 25, 26 are spaced apart either by an air gap 27 or by insulation surrounding the conductor 24 before it is wound. The pitch distance of the helix is less than one-quarter wavelength and is preferably such that the gap 27 between the turns is less than the diameter of the conductor 24. The helix can be a single or stranded wire of spring steel or iron plated with a highly conductive material such as copper or silver. The jacket 28 comprises a conical frustrum having its inside surface contiguous with the outermost part of the helix. The dissipative material of the jacket 28 can comprise small particles of resistive material such as iron dust or carbon black suspended in a dielectric material such as polyethylene. The jacket 28 is covered with a non-corrosive conducting shield 30 which may be of wound overlapping thin strips or of woven braid. The waveguide sections 17, 21 having the larger diameter are of long length and the waveguide sections 15, 19, 23 of smaller diameter are of short length incorporating bends and are connected to transducers 13, 14 between a repeater or transmitting station 11 and a repeater or receiving station 12. The diameter of the guide 32 can be from 1.25 to 10 times the cut-off diameter which is 1.22 # 0 where # 0 is the wavelength in free space of the longest wave in the transmission band. The effects of placing a TM filter in various parts of the transmission system is discussed. Specification 764,737 is referred to.
