Abstract

An apparatus for coding mail for sorting sprays a patch of ink containing magnetic particles against one face of the package or letter being driven along a conveyer (see Group XXX), the patch being subsequently coded magnetically. The coating is sufficiently light to enable the address still to be read through it, but heavy enough to retain the magnetic information. The articles are carried by a conveyer past an air-gun, their presence being detected, e.g. by a photocell, and causing the gun to spray the ink through a mask. Specification 824,076 is referred to.
