Abstract
883,022. Making spoons and forks. FIRTHVICKERS STAINLESS STEELS Ltd. June 12, 1958 [March 14, 1957], No. 8528/57. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXIII] In a method of making articles e.g. spoons and forks, of corrosion-resisting steel and having a length of greater width or area and lesser thickness than an adjoining length, the respective lengths are produced separately as preformed simple blanks which are then welded together to form composite blanks or alternatively composite blanks are punched directly from sheets or strips which have been welded together edge-to-edge, the welded joints afterwards being trimmed and the composite blanks subjected to mechanical working to the final shape. A spoon blank, Figs. 1 and 2, of austenitic steel is formed by welding together a handle blank 10, punched from rolled strip, and a blank 12, which may be shaped to the profile 13 of the bowl. Surplus weld metal is then removed by grinding and the composite blank is worked to final shape. The handle blank may be tapered strip and the preformed blanks 10, 12 may be polished prior to welding. In a modification composite table spoon blanks 24 are punched from a composite sheet formed by welding together a sheet 20 and two thinner strips 21, Fig. 3, the blanks 24 being subsequently stamped or pressed and polished. The composite sheet may also be formed from one thick and one thin sheet welded together. The sheet 20 or strip 21 may be polished prior to welding. In a further modification a handle blank is forged from bar stock (Fig. 7, not shown) and a sheet bowl blank is welded to it. Forks may also be formed from similar composite blanks the prongs being punched during the final shaping. Welding may be by electric resistance flash butt welding, inert gas shielded arc welding, metal arc or carbon-arc welding or atomic hydrogen welding.
