Abstract

The apparatus comprises an endless conveyor 1 supporting a plurality of carriers 2 each adapted to support an array of scaled flanged containers 4 arranged in rows and ranks and coupling members 5 located in position below the top flanges of the containers. The containers are bonded to the coupling members by ultrasonic welding means 32. The coupling members are located on spigots 9 of the carriers to present an upper face coplanar with the upper face of the carrier (Figs 3-5). Prior to welding, the containers are carried through a first registration station 24, in which each container is turned by cooperating upper and lower rotary chucks 28 and pads 26 to bring the projecting lid tabs of the containers into a predetermined orientation (Fig. 9) and then through a second registration station 30 at which at least one container is rotated to ensure a bar code therein is accessible. The anvil of the welding means is of particular shape (Figs 7 and 8). <IMAGE>
