Abstract

In a method of removing ammonia and acidic impurities from coke-oven gas, a first portion of the gas is washed with a liquor containing free sulphuric acid and ferrous sulphate, obtained for example in pickling steel, and a second portion of the gas is washed with a liquor which is almost neutral and has been used in washing the first portion of the gas. The liquor used in washing the first portion of the gas may have a pH of less than 2,5 and in washing the second portion of the gas a pH between 2,8 and 3,5. The liquor for washing the second portion of the gas may be used until the pH has risen to 8. The two portions of the coke-oven gas are washed in separate scrubbers and the process is preferably a continuous one, liquor being continuously supplied to and withdrawn from each scrubber and also re-circulated within each scrubber. The second portion of the coke-oven gas may be subjected to an additional washing to remove any residual ammonia. Ammonia may, if necessary, be added to the coke-oven gas and sulphuric acid or ferrous sulphate to the washing liquor. Ammonium sulphate and ferrous sulphide are recovered from the second scrubber.
