Abstract
882,607. Electrolytic apparatus and processes. SEAILLES, J. C. Jan. 30, 1958 [Feb. 1, 1957], No. 3172/58. Class 41. A multicell electrolytic apparatus comprises end electrodes, fe, of iron, graphite or other material, porous diaphragms D1-n, and partitions Pa1-n of palladium between the diaphragms. When water containing an electrolyte is electrolysed in the apparatus oxygen and hydrogen are given off at the two electrodes respectively but in the cells hydrogen absorbed by the palladium plates combines with electrolytic oxygen to form pure water, which is drawn off periodically as at 3a-c, additional water being supplied at 2a-c. To prevent warping of the palladium plates they may be initially saturated with hydrogen. The apparatus is used for the separation of heavy water, which is concentrated on the upstream side of the palladium plates and removed periodically.
