882,476. Regulating yeast. PATENTAUSWERTUNG VOGELBUSCH G.m.b.H. Oct. 30, 1959 [Nov. 14, 1958], No. 36979/59. Class 14 (2). In the production of yeast in a mash, the regulation of the respective rates of supply to the mash of oxygen and nutritive material is derived from the instantaneous alcohol content of the exhaust gases, by collecting the gases in a known amount or at a known rate and measuring the alcohol content, e.g. with a refractometer or colourimetrically; the change in refraction or discoloration may be measured continually and converted into an electric signal which is used for automatically adjusting the rates of supply either in an on-and-off manner or by proportional adjustments. A portion of the alcohol-containing exhaust gases escaping from a vat a through a conduit b is drawn by a precision pump c 1 into a heated reaction vessel e containing a sulphuric acid solution of potassium bichromate of a determined concentration, supplied by a pump c 2 ; the discoloration produced is continuously measured in a colourimeter g and the signal derived is, after suitable amplification used for regulation of valves controlling the supplies of nutrient solution and air. The pumps c 1 , c 2 may be replaced by a syphon or aspirator, and a drip feed, respectively. German Specification 739,021 is referred to.
