A machine for punching triangular &c. notches in the edges of printers' rules 30 comprises a row of dieopenings 29, Fig. 6, each having a punch-guide 32, Fig. 4, means 20, 40 for supporting the rule 30 with the apices of the die-openings intersecting the edge of the rule, and punches 45 insertable selectively in the guides according to the required notch-spacings. As shown, two die-blocks 26, 27 are provided, each having along one edge a row of slots with triangular ends 29 to receive the punches, so that two rules may be punched simultaneously. The openings 29 in one row may be staggered relatively to those in the other and of a different V-shape, and a rule may be operated on by both rows of dies in succession, micrometer adjusters 66 being provided to locate the rules lengthwise of the rows. The punches are guided in slots 33 formed in blocks 32 and closed by caps 32a, 32b, and have cranked ends for engagement over a plate 48, Fig. 2, which withdraws the punches by means of springs 49. The work is stripped from the punches by the upper, inclined surface of block 32 and is held against a central locating strip 38, Fig. 4, by a workholder 40 which is loosely attached by screws 41 to the work support 20 or 21 and rocked about the screws by vertical or horizontal springs 37, 42. Operation of the press-head 50 against the punches is by a fluidpressure cylinder 64 controlled by a pushbutton 21 and operating racks 63. Pinions 62 engaging the racks rotate eccentrics 59 in contact with rollers 58 on a spring-returned frame 56 having guided posts 51, 52 supporting the press-head. The apices of the punches intersect the edges of the rules.
