Abstract

882,134. Aerials and radar. DECCA RECORD CO. Ltd. Aug. 22, 1960 [Aug. 25. 1959], No. 29120/59. Class 40(7). A directional aerial system comprises a length of square or rectangular waveguide in each of two forces of which is a series of radiating slots, the two series differing in their phase and/or amplitude characteristics to produce beams in different directions. Such a system for use in an airborne Doppler navigational equipment may radiate or receive over each of two pairs of simultaneous beams alternately, one pair being a beam directed forward and to port together with another beam directed after and to starboard, the other pair being a beam directed forward and to starboard with a second beam directed after and to port, so that ground speed and drift may be determined. The system comprises a waveguide 10, Fig. 1, in two opposite faces of which is a multiplicity of radiating slots, those in one face being a phased array and those in the other an anti-phased array (i.e. if fed in phase adjacent slots of the array in 11 would radiate in phase whereas adjacent slots in 12 would radiate in anti-phase), so that two beams are produced, one inclined forward and the other backward to the axis of the guide. By alternately feeding the guide from opposite ends the alternate pairs of simultaneous beams are produced and a suitable feed system comprises a transmitter 20, Fig. 3, and a receiver 21 coupled by a duplexer 22 and switches 24 to the guide 10 with matched loads 25 connected by the switches to the unfed end of the guide. The aerial system is mounted with the axis of the guide horizontal and the beams are directed downwards by parabolic cylindrical reflectors 18, Fig. 1, formed from the upper plate of a flared parallel plate transmission line 16. The aerial system may be carried on either a fully or pitch stabilized mounting and may be aligned with its axis parallelto the fore and aft direction of the aircraft or be rotatable to be aligned with the direction of travel. The aerial system may also be used for ground radar applications.
