Abstract
Fibres based on polymers of olefins, or the polymeric components thereof, are treated with phosgene. Specified polyolefins include polyethylene, polypropylene and polybutylene. Treatment with phosgene may be effected in a gaseous medium or in suspension in a liquid, e.g. liquefied phosgene, cyclohexane or sulphuric acid. Preferably the formed fibre is treated with phosgene at from 70-80 DEG C. and then washed with water or an aqueous acidic or basic solution to remove any free phosgene. Prior to phosgenation, the formed fibres may be peroxidized or hydroperoxidized. Before spinning, the olefin polymer may be mixed with a polyhydroxyl compound or a compound capable of conversion into a polyhydroxyl compound. The amount of polymer in the mix is desirably 80-99% by weight. The polyhydroxyl compound may be treated with phosgene prior to admixture with the polymer, or the mix may be spun and the formed fibres treated with phosgene. Specified polyhydroxyl compounds include condensation products of epichlorhydrin with phenol or a polyvalent alcohol, condensation products of formaldehyde with phenols, and epoxy resins containing oxiran groups. The fibres may be aminated after phosgenation with compounds containing amino or imino groups, suitably with a boiling aqueous solution of the amination agent for a period from a few seconds to three hours. Specified agents include ethylene imine and other alkylene imines, methylamine, ethylamine, ethylenediamine, trimethylenediamine, hexamethylenediamine, diethylene triamine and tetraethylene pentamine. The treatment enhances the receptivity of the fibres to dyes.ALSO:The receptivity to dyes of fibres based on polymers of olefins is enhanced by treatment of the fibres, or the polymeric components thereof, with phosgene. Specified polyolefins include polyethylene, polypropylene and polybutylene. Treatment with phosgene may be effected in a gaseous medium or in suspension in a liquid, e.g. liquified phosgene, cyclohexane or sulphuric acid. Preferably the formed fibre is treated with phosgene at from 70 DEG C.-80 DEG C. and then washed with water or an aqueous acidic or basic solution to remove any free phosgene. Prior to phosgenation, the formed fibres may be peroxidised or hydroperoxidised. Before spinning, the olefin polymer may be mixed with a polyhydroxyl compound or a compound capable of conversion into a polyhydroxyl compound. The amount of polymer in the mix is desirably 80%-99% by weight. Examples illustrate the dyeing of fibres so treated with acid, basic and dispersed acetate dyes.
