Abstract

881,940. Gut-slitting apparatus. BJORKMAN, C. G. Jan. 11, 1960, No. 946/60. Class 31 (1). Apparatus for slitting gut comprises a guide peg over which the gut is trained and fluid jet means acting obliquely on the outer surface of the gut for moving the gut along the peg and over a cutting blade disposed substantially perpendicular to the path of movement of the gut over the peg. The apparatus shown in Fig. 7 comprises a hollow peg 18 over which a gut is trained, the gut being moved along the peg by means of fluid jets 20 to the runs of a driven endless band cutter 24. The run 55 passes through a slot 54, Fig. 8, in the peg and the run 57 is disposed between the inner edge of the peg and a spring 56, for distending the gut laterally, and is maintained from sidewise vibration by a finger 53. The gut is cut into four ribbons 60, 62, 64, 66, Fig. 10, and these are conveyed with the fluid into four hoppers, e.g. 26, 32, Fig. 7, and thence into pipes 110, 112, 114, 116 which are connected at their other ends to swingable flow directing elements 38, Fig. 2. The cut ribbons are directed into troughing apparatus 14, Figs. 1 and 2, the upper reaches of which comprise four inclined troughs, the base of each of which has a medial slot in which is disposed an intermittentlydriven endless belt provided with longitudinal endless wires having upstanding lateral ends to act as snagging means 40 for immobilizing the cut ribbon adjacent the leading end thereof. For this purpose, the elements 38 are first swung so as to be directed towards one side of each trough and then swung so as to be directed towards the other side of each trough. The lower reaches of the troughing apparatus comprise plates 186, Figs. 1 and 2, provided with grooves 187 and ridges 189 to receive the trailing ends of the cut ribbons. The lower of the plates 186 conveys the fluid to a box 192 provided with a wire frame 193 and an overflow 195. The peg is provided with orifices 48, 49, Fig. 7, through which fluid is delivered for distending the gut, facilitating its threading on the peg and lubricating its passage over the peg. The operator stands on a platform 103, Fig. 1, and depresses a treadle 105 to operate a valve to admit fluid, e.g. water, to piping 107 and thence to nozzles 22, Fig. 7. Conduit 111, Fig. 1, conducts fluid independently of the treadleoperated valve to piping 115 and thence through passages to lubricate the band cutter. A conduit 121 conducts fluid to the lower end of the peg. The guts for training over the peg are obtained from a tank 16, Fig. 2, and placed initially around a horn 100. Means are provided for adjusting the tension of the band cutter and for adjusting the distance between its runs. In a modification, Figs. 23 and 25 (not shown), the gut is cut into only two ribbons.
