881,791. Magnetic recording methods. CONTINENTAL OIL CO. Nov. 17, 1959, No. 39015/59. Class 40 (2). Discrete values of a variable are recorded as successive zones of uniform magnetization by a head 12 with a wide gap#, the intensity of magnetization being represented by the blocks 6. The spacing # between successive blocks 6 is not more than ¢# and is preferably zero. The record is indexed in steps of # + e in accordance with the operation of an analogue computer, which feeds the winding of the head 12 and the apparatus may be multi-channel (Fig. 5, not shown). On playback, the record may be driven continuously, whereupon a signal corresponding to the envelope of the discrete values is developed which may be further smoothed by filters and copied on to a further permanent record.
