Abstract
Organo-silicon-boron compounds of the formula <FORM:0881624/III/1> where R is a carbocylic radical, are used as petroleum additives which are hydrolytically and thermally stable, e.g. as V.I. improvers, in lubricants and greases, as cetane improvers, ignition promoters, anti-knock agents, preventives of pre-ignition &c.ALSO:The invention comprises siladiborinanes of the formula <FORM:0881624/IV (a)/1> where R is a carbocyclic radical which may be substituted by radicals which do not react with boronic acid during the preparation. They are prepared by reacting a carbocyclylboronic acid RB(OH)2 with a dicarbocyclylsilane diol R2Si (OH)2, preferably in a molar ratio of at least 2:1. Each R can be the same or different; examples are phenyl, mono- and poly-alkyl phenyl, biphenyl, naphthyl, alkyl naphthyl, tetrahydronaphthyl, anthryl, alkyl anthryl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, and halo and alkoxy carbocyclic radicals. The examples describe the preparation of 2,2,4,6-tetraphenyl, tetra-(p-tolyl)-and tetra-(m-chlorophenyl)-1,3,5-trioxa-2-siladiborinanes, and 2-phenyl-2,4,6-tricyclohexyl-1,3,5-trioxa-2-siladiborinane. The compounds are useful, inter alia, as plasticizers for polyvinyl and polyvinylidene halides, e.g. chloride or bromide, with or without other plasticizers, e.g. trialkyl cyanurates, in amounts of from 2 to 65% by weight of the composition. Other uses: neutron absorbers, ingredients in flame-resistant compositions, active ingredient in insectisides, germicides, fungicides &c., in arc-extinguishing tubes, heat-exchange media, petroleum additives.
