Abstract
881,575. Bolometers. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C. (Barnes Engineering Co.) June 23, 1960, No. 22059/60. Class 37. A thermistor bolometer responsive to infrared radiation comprises a window 4 of material of high thermal conductivity of sufficient thickness to constitute a heat sink, and a thermistor flake 5 in heat conductive relation with said window. The window, which passes infra-red in a predetermined range, may be of vitreous fused alumina, quartz, or a semiconductor such as germanium or silicon. Terminal pins 3, connected to the thermistor 5 by wires 6, project through an insulating backing 2, the whole device being housed in a casing 1. If the window is electrically conductive a thin layer of insulating material is interposed between window and thermistor; this layer may be of material of low thermal conductivity, such as selenium or modified selenium glass, and of such thickness as to produce a predetermined time constant for the bolometer. The window may form a lens; Fig. 2 shows a hemispherical window 7 of germanium insulated by a layer 8 of selenium &c. from the thermistor 5. The lens may be less or more than a hemisphere. A second thermistor flake, not shown, masked from the radiation, is included in the device to provide temperature compensation.
