Abstract

[Also in Groups XIX and XXXVIII] In an epicyclic train, in order to equalize the load on the planets 3, the reaction annulus 4 is floatingly supported by a number of circumferentially spaced bell-crank levers 11, 8 mounted on fixed pivots 9, the arms 8 engaging in recesses 7 in the annulus and the arms 11 engaging an endless belt, cable or chain 14 arranged around the annulus. The annulus is thus held in a floating position and the reaction therefrom is taken up by the tension in the member 14. This tension can be measured to give a measurement of the torque transmitted through the gearing by a strain gauge consisting of a link 15 interposed in the tension member and carrying an electrical resistance element 16 secured to it. A second resistance element 17 on an unstrained limb of the link 15 may be utilized for temperature compensation. Another form of strain gauge which can be used comprises a device for measuring the natural frequency of vibration of the tension member 14 which comprises an electromagnet energized by an alternating current of adjustable frequency to excite vibration of the wire. The frequency is adjusted until resonance is obtained which is detected by a suitable form of pick-up. The tension and torque is proportional to the square of the resonance frequency.
