Abstract

881,163. Spring suspensions. RUBERY OWEN & CO. Ltd. Aug. 19, 1960 [May 20, 1959], No. 17078/59. Class 108(2). A. rear suspension for a vehicle has tandem rear axles incorporating laminated steel springs in combination with air springs. In the embodiment shown two axles 13, 16 are attached to the middle of laminated steel springs 28 and 19 whichare attached at their front ends to brackets 29 and 22 mounted on chassis side members 10 and at their rear ends to brackets on transverse members 32 and 25. The load reaction on thefront member 32 is taken by a pair. of air springs 33 located withinthe chassis frame and interposed between the member 32 and abutments 34 mounted on a chassis cross member 12. The load reaction on the rear member 25 is taken by air springs 26 interposed between the extended ends of member 25 and brackets. 27 mounted outside the chassis frame 10, the wide mounting increasing the stability of the vehicle. Levelling valves 37 control the admission of air from reservoir 35 to air cylinders 42 mounted within the sidemembers 10. Each cylinder 42 is connected to. the air springs on the same side by largebore pipes 43 to compensatefor unequal axle loading on uneven ground. Steel straps 45 are provided to limit downward movement of the axle.
