Abstract

<PICT:0880743/III/1> A filter unit suitable for use in the heater or ventilating system of motor vehicles to remove exhaust fumes from entering air comprises a pair of elongated, concentric, frustoconical perforated members (11, 12) having an annular space therebetween packed with active charcoal or other filtering medium (14), mounted concentrically in an elongated cylindrical housing (1), the inner perforated member and annular space between the perforated members being blocked at the inlet end of the unit (by plugs 15, 16) and the annular space between the housing and the outer perforated member and the annular space between the two perforated members being blocked at the outlet end of the unit (by closure member 6). The numerals in brackets refer to the preferred embodiment shown in Fig. 1 wherein the perforated members are constructed of copper gauze and mounted in the housing, which may be of metal or reinforced rubber tubing, by means of a band element 17 supported by spacer members 18 and a corrugated metal spacer strip 20. The resilient support given by the latter is said to vibrate the filter element and so remove clogging dust particles, when located in position in a vehicle. The filter unit may be mounted in, or may form part or the whole of the connecting tube between the air intake fan and the car heater or may be mounted on the air intake side of the fan.
