Abstract
880,390. Making waveguides. AVIATION, MINISTER OF. July 20, 1960 [May 7, 1959], No. 15680/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XL (b)] A waveguide or cavity resonator is made by coating a former with a thin layer of metal, moulding the coated former in an artificial resin, removing the former and applying a second layer of metal upon the first layer. The former may be made of phenolic resin and may be removed by milling. A stainless steel former may be used and may be removed by thermal shrinkage. Other suitable former materials are Woods metal and frozen mercury. The first layer of metal is preferably of a granular nature and may consist of copper applied with a spray gun. If the former is removed by milling, part of the first metallic layer is also milled away, e.g. with a diamond milling tool. The second layer of metal may consist of electrolytically deposited silver which is subsequently given a high polish. The same metal may be used for both layers. The moulding preferably consists of an epoxy resin.
