The speed of an electric motor, for example an A.C. asynchronous driving motor 2, 3 of a magnetic tape recorder, is kept constant by comparing the frequency f1 of pulses produced in an induction coil 8 by a toothed disc 7 on the motor shaft with a reference frequency f0 obtained from oscillator 11 via a frequency divider/ multiplier 12, and using the output of comparer 10 (which is zero for f1 < f0 and increases rapidly as f1 exceeds f0) to control an eddy-current brake 5. 6.
