Abstract

880,009. Clutch control. CHICAGO COIN MACHINE CO. Dec. 18, 1957 [April 1, 1957], No. 39409/57. Class 80 (2). [Also in Groups XVIII and XXI] The piston and feed mechanism of a pneumatically operated machine gun (see Group XXI) is operated by means of an electric motor 17, Fig. 3, via a clutch assembly 20 controlled electrically by the trigger mechanism. The assembly 20 comprises a hub 21, Fig. 7, mounted on and rotatable with the shaft 18 of the motor 17 and connected by a disc 23 of shock-absorbing material to a driven hub 24 on which is secured a cup-shaped clutch disc 27 carried by ball bearings 28 in a circular housing 29. The disc 27 is movable into engagement with a second driven clutch disc 32 secured to and driving a shaft 25 operating the piston and feed mechanism. A solenoid 44, Figs. 5, 6, operated by a trigger switch controls the movement of the disc 27 and has an armature 45 formed at one end with a hook portion 46 having a spring-bias connection to a pivot arm 47 of an eccentric pivot plate 48. The hook 46 protrudes through a slot 49 in the arm 47 and an expansion spring 51 engages between a washer 50 on the arm 47 and pivot connection 52 between the arm 47 and plate 48. The arrangement is such that when the armature 45 is electrically drawn into the solenoid 44, the consequent movement of the arm 47 will pivot the plate 48 about its pivotal support 53. The plate 48 has eccentrically mounted thereon a vertically extending roller 55 which engages a shaft 38 and moves it horizontally against the action of springs 43. The movement of the shaft 38 pivots uprights 31, Fig. 3, which are pivotally connected to the clutch housing 29 by means of pins 30, Figs. 3, 7. The clutch plate 27 is thus moved horizontally into engagement with the plate 32.
