Abstract
880,007. Folding edges. KAMBORIAN, J. S. Nov. 20, 1957 [Nov. 20, 1956], No. 36103/57. Class 42 (1). Apparatus for folding the margin 7 of a cover sheet over the edge of a workpiece 4, Fig. 29, to form a panel with or without intermediate padding, comprises (a) tapering lasting rolls 30, 31 for progressively pulling small areas of the margin upwardly, while advancing the margin lengthwise, (b) a stationary folder 66 and a rotary wiper 35 for laying the stressed margin, as it is released, inwardly over the upper face of the workpiece, (c) means, such as a stapler 46 or an adhesive supply nozzle, for fastening the margin, while stressed, to the workpiece face and (d) a workpiece-supporting table 27 movable into and out of operative relationship with (a), (b) and (c). Lasting rolls 30, 31.-These are mounted on converging axes in a supporting frame 50, Fig. 22, which is tiltable to incline the rolls adjustably in the direction of feed. Roll 30 is carried by a slide 52 which can be advanced by an air cylinder, in opposition to a spring 86, to separate the rolls. The rolls are driven from a shaft 58, Fig. 21, carrying a pulley 60 which is driven from an electric motor in the base of the machine. Folder 66.-This is carried by a slide 68, Fig. 22, linked by a lever 78 with slide 52 so that as roll 30 is separated from roll 31, folder 66 is retracted. Wiper 35.-This has a helical rib 36, Fig. 22, and is mounted on a pivoted arm 124, Fig. 21. It is pressed towards the table top by a spring 126, but can be raised therefrom by operation of an air cylinder 128. The wiper is driven at a much higher speed than rolls 30, 31, by belt and pulley drive, from a shaft 122 connected to the main drive shaft or a separate motor. Stapler 46.-This forms staples from a continuous length of wire and drives them through the margin 7, to be crimped within the body of the panel, where the margin is held taut between folder 66 and wiper 35. Table 27.-This is carried by a frame 92 which can be raised or lowered, relative to a frame 96, by operation of an air cylinder. Frame 96 is adjustable vertically, relative to a base 40, by means of a rack and pinion, to accommodate workpieces of different thickness. A driven roller 38 is supported by table 27 and projects through a slot 90 therein, to assist in feeding the work. Roller 38 may be mounted in a turntable within table 27 so that its axis can be angularly adjusted in a horizontal plane and an inward feeding force imparted which will keep the work in engagement with the folding means. The upper surface of the table may be provided with ball bearings to facilitate turning the work on the table. Operation using stapler.-With the motor or motors running continuously, operation of a foot switch so actuates an air pressure system that rolls 30, 31 are brought together, folder 66 is advanced, table 27 is raised, stapler 46 is driven and wiper 35 is lowered. A second operation of the foot pedal reverses these operations, ready for insertion of the next workpiece. Operation wing adhesive.-Folder 66 is omitted and stapler 46 is replaced by a cement pot which delivers cement, under applied air pressure, through a nozzle 37, Fig. 12, discharging in the angle between the margins of the cover and the workpiece. Provision is made for fast and slow speed feed and adhesive delivery. The machine normally operates at slow speed, with low pressure applied to the cement pot. To operate at high speed, a second foot switch is operated to increase the speed of drive and apply high pressure to the cement pot.
