Abstract

An article is spray-coated with a composition comprising a coating material dispersed in a volatile solvent, by exposing the uncoated article to the vapour of the solvent until it has attained the temperature thereof, spraying the article with the coating composition at its boiling point, maintaining the article in the solvent vapour atmosphere for 5 seconds followed by such further period as is required to reduce the coating thereon to the desired thickness, and then removing it from the solvent vapour atmosphere and allowing it to cool. Suitable coating materials are alkyd resins, asphalt, phenolic lacquers, acrylic resins, polyethylene, polystyrene, and some rubber-based compositions. The preferred solvents are trichlorethylene, perchlorethylene and methylene chloride, but hydrocarbon, ketone or other solvents may be used. In an example, a trichlorethylene composition comprising solvent, linseed oil-modified alkyd resin, and lamp black pigment is heated to boiling point in a conventional vapour phase degreaser provided with cooling coils at the top to prevent loss of solvent, and with spray nozzles through which the paint is forced by a pump. Steel panels are immersed in the solvent vapour until heated to the temperature thereof, then spray-painted, and then exposed to the vapour for varying intervals before removal. The process may be carried out continuously, the articles being carried through the various treatment stages by a conveyer.
