Abstract
Compositions which can readily be prepared for spinning are made from polymers containing at least 70% by weight of acrylonitrile and prepared by aqueous polymerization by filtering the aqueous polymer slurry to form a wet filter cake, washing the cake with an aqueous solution containing from 75%-90% by weight of dimethyl-formamide, dimethylacetamide or dimethyl sulphoxide, and filtering to remove sufficient liquid from the washed polymer to provide a mixture having a solids content of from 50%-60% by weight and a water content of from 5%-15% by weight. When the resulting mixtures contain 7,5%-12,5% of water, they may be heated to 170 DEG -200 DEG C. and extruded directly through a spinneret. Alternatively, there may be added to the mixture from 25%-60% of one of the above-mentioned organic solvents, followed by heating to from 90 DEG -150 DEG C. to form a spinning solution. The acrylonitrile polymer used may include copolymerizable monomers such as methyl acrylate, methyl and butyl methacrylates, acrylyl chloride, methacrylamide, vinyl acetate, vinyl trimethyl acetate, methyl vinyl ketone, styrene, dimethyl itaconate, diethyl maleate, vinyl pyridine, vinyloxyethyl formamide, salts of styrene sulphonic acid and other monomers described in Specifications 586,796, 586,881 and 765,585.
