Abstract

In a cyclic process for the production of hydrogen peroxide by successive oxidation and reduction of an anthraquinone in an organic solvent, wherein the hydrogen peroxide product is extracted from the organic phase with water, the extraction is carried out in a column with the aqueous and organic phases flowing countercurrently and the organic solution droplets present in the column are coalesced by contact with solid polyethylene. polypropylene, polytetrafluoethylene or polyvinyl chloride (which are preferentially wetted by the organic phase) in the form of a perforated plate or grid as chips or rings. In a plate column, sufficient difference between the plate and the polymeric solid should be given to allow for the presence of a continuous organic phase above or below the plate. After washing in such a column the organic phase is passed to a hydrogenator forming part of the cycle. Specification 465,070 is referred to.
