Abstract

879,483. Finishing fabrics; agglutinated fibrous materials. AUGSTEN, R. Oct. 11, 1958, No. 32527/58. Classes 42 (1) and 140. [Also in Groups IX and XIII] A damp woven or knitted fabric web or fibre fleece is shrunk by vibrating it as it passes through a drying zone, the amplitude of vibration imparted to the web or fleece progressively decreasing in the direction of feed and the supply of drying medium into and from the drying zone being controlled in inverse relation to the speed of the feed. The latter feature allows reduced rate of feed and simultaneous increase of drying effect when dealing with heavy fabrics. As shown, the web or fleece passes, between a feed roller 1 and a discharge roller 3, over a vibratory grid 2, drying air passing downwards through the grid. The feed end of the grid is oscillated on a guide rod a while the discharge end has a horizontal sliding motion only. A fibre fleece may be steeped in an agglutinating agent which is set to form a " non-woven " article. In an alternative arrangement, the drying air passes upwards through the grid and supports the web or fleece against the underside of the grid.
