Abstract

879,143. Yarns and threads; preparing and treating fibres. ELOFLOCK OBERFLACHENVEREDLUNG G. m. b. H. Dec. 11, 1959 No. 42235/59. Classes 120(1) and 120(3) In a method of electrostatically coating a filament, yarn, thread, wire or like filamentary body, with particulate material such as short pieces of fibrous material or flock, the particles are subjected to the influence of two or more simultaneously produced electrostatic fields acting in succession on the particles during their movement relative to the filament, &c. Thus, particles after entering a coating zone may be subjected to a first electrostatic field directed towards a high potential mesh electrode through which they travel and, whilst maintaining the same direction of movement, are conveyed under the action of a second electrostatic field (which may be generated by the same high potential electrode) to the filament &c., which is at a quasiearth potential: particles carrying beyond the filament reverse their movement, return to their starting position, and the cycle recommences, so that the filament, which is adhesive or has an adhesive coating, becomes uniformly coated with particles. The enclosed apparatus shown comprises a storage container 2 wherein a supply of flock maintained from a hopper 27 is distributed by a rotating brush 3 (wings 4 of which carry brushes, bristles or rubber lips) over a resilientlymounted, foraminous closure or screen 5, a portion 6 of which is reciprocated by engagement of a catch on a shaft 7. Flock passes uniformly on to an endless conveyer 8, driven through an infinitely variable gear 9 from a motor which also drives shaft 7, and is carried beneath reciprocated, high-voltage and earthed, mesh electrodes 11 and 30 between which fibres oscillate under the influence of electrostatic fields and form a coating on filaments 29 supported within the casing in stretched condition. Excess fibres are collected in a hopper 16 to be blown by a fan 17 through a pipe 18 into container 2: air escapes through a permeable, accordian-pleated, fabric closure 19 from the underside of which fibres are shaken free by arms 24, 25, 26, actuated by engagement of wings 4 with lever arm 22. The mesh of electrode 11 may be larger than that of electrode 30.
