Class 34(2) In a tumbler drier two air streams which are inclined to each other are caused to flow across the interior of the drum. The drier shown comprises a drum 5, Fig. 1, mounted within a casing 35 which also houses a pivotally mounted motor 48, a suction fan 51 and a duct 58 accommodating a lint trap 63. The drum, which is as des- .cribed in Specification 852,034, is surrounded by a housing 14 having a mesh covered air inlet opening 24, air inlet orifices 26 and discharge slots 25, and has an opening 12 which registers with openings in the end wall 19 of the housing 14 and the casing 35 and has associated therewith a door 38, Fig. 2. The housing 14 supports, atop the opening 24, a heater 27 which is mounted below a reflector 29 and enclosed in a cover 30 and which simultaneously heats the air entering the drum through opening 24 and the drum interior The base of casing 35 is open such that the fan 51 draws air up around the housing 14 and through the openings 24, 26, the air flow to the opening 24 being through holes 31, Fig. 6, aperture rows 32 ... 34 and the heater 27. The rows of holes 32 ... 34 are proportioned such that air flows therethrough in equal amounts to keep the heater 27 at a uniform temperature over its entire surface. The moisture laden air streams enter the duct 58 through apertures 25 depositing lint on the screen 63 a process assisted by incoming air streams effected through rows of apertures 62 in the duct. The lint is removed from the duct inner walls on withdrawal of the screen 63 by a sealing ring 65, Fig. 3, and the fan 51 may discharge rearwardly or forwardly through respective outlets 67, 69. The door 38 has a cam portion 40, Fig. 7, which actuates an adjustable plunger 44 of a door switch 41 such that on door closing a relay 88, Fig. 9, is actuated to start the drier whilst on door opening the drier is shut down and an interior light 90, Fig. 6, is energised. The drum is driven by the motor 48 through a belt 74, Fig. 4, pulleys 71, 72, belt 76<SP>1</SP> and pulley 77, pulleys 71, 72 being mounted coaxially on a shaft 73 which is pivotally mounted through an arm 70 on an upright member 2. The belt 74 also embraces a blower pulley 76 and the drive system is tensioned by springs 78, 79. The electrical control system of the drier comprises a timer 83 and a variable thermostat 85 the sensitive device 86 of which is mounted on the housing 14. A safety thermostat 87<SP>1</SP> on the cover 30 shuts the drier down on failure of the air flow. Should the device 86 fail if the air temperature rises to a clothes damaging level a thermostat 87 is provided to open the heater circuit.
