Abstract
Pigmentary ferrosoferric oxide is prepared by heating converter dust, obtained by refining iron with oxygen bearing gases, with solid or gaseous carbonaceous reducing agents or hydrogen containing gases, the converter dust employed having a size predominantly below 5 microns. The reduction is preferably effected at 500-800 DEG C. and air is preferably excluded. The product has the same particle size analysis as the original converter dust and any slight agglomeration may be broken up by passage through a pin mill. The converter dust employed may be the dust removed from the exhaust gases of converters or the sludge obtained in wet separating processes after drying and disintegrating. Suitable reducing agents, which are preferably employed in stoichiometric excess, are finely ground coal, charcoal, coke or soot, normally employed in amounts of 1-6% by weight of converter dust; fuel oils, mineral oils and fatty oils, waste sulphite liquor and molasses may be similarly employed. Gaseous reducing agents may be hydrogen, carbon monoxide or gas mixtures containing them in which case the converter dust may be entrained in the gases. As a modification the hot exhaust gases from the iron converter, containing the converter dust in suspension may be subjected directly to partial reduction so that the ferrosoferric oxide formed is subsequently precipitated from the exhaust gases. Once reduction is complete the iron oxide should be quenched to below 300 DEG C. preferably with a liquid such as water. The converter dust or the ferrosoferric oxide obtained therefrom may be treated with dilute hydrochloric acid to remove impurities. According to an example converter dust was mixed with 5% of coal dust, crushed and fed to a rotary kiln heated to 650 DEG C.; the material leaving the kiln was cooled to about 100 DEG C. and broken up in a pin mill. Further examples relate to the reduction of converter dust with spindle oil and carbon monoxide respectively.
