Abstract

878,480. Silencing gaseous currents. ROCKWELL-STANDARD CORPORATION. Dec. 2, 1958 [Dec. 18, 1957], No. 38803/58. Class 7(2). [Also in Group XXII] A metallic ribbon 0À016 to 0À020 inches broad and 0À005 to 0À010 inches thick is knitted or woven into a tubular mesh, Fig. 1, which is flattened and coiled into a spiral, starting and finishing at an open end of the mesh, the spiral K, Fig. 6, being then axially compressed between dies 11, 16 to form a cone P, Fig. 5, having wire screen retaining facings 5, 7 which are added at an intermediate stage K<SP>1</SP> of the compression. As shown the cone P is applied to silence the intake or exhaust of a pneumatic motor or tool connected at 29. In the finished cone, the ribbon surfaces lie mainly perpendicular to the cone axis. The ribbon may be of steel, copper, brass or aluminium. The mesh is crimped, e.g. at 45 degrees, before or after flattening, the crimps being parallel and nested or non-nested, or non- parallel. Instead of the facings 5 and 7 the cone may have respectively a mesh of ridges and a mesh of grooves impressed on it by appropriate patterning of the dies so that it retains its shape.
