Abstract

878,382. Charge forming devices. MINOZA, C. Feb. 4, 1958, No. 3699/58. Class 7(3). A charge forming device comprises an evaporator tube assembly 10 heated by the engine's exhaust gases and adapted to continuously feed and vaporize fuel, supplied by a siphon 2 from an auxiliary fuel tank 1, into a mixer tube assembly 14 at the lower end of the evaporator tube assembly, the mixer tube assembly being connected to an inlet manifold of the engine and adapted to admit air and mix it in correct proportions with the vaporized fuel issuing from the evaporator tube assembly and allow a metered amount of the resulting vaporized fuel and air mixture into the engine through the inlet manifold. As shown, the auxiliary fuel tank 1 is connected to the fuel pump (not shown) and the level of liquid fuel therein is maintained constantly above the upper bend of the siphon tube 2 by means of a float valve (not shown). The needle valve 3 could be controlled mechanically or electrically. It can be controlled mechanically by the operator. It is stated that the needle could be controlled mechanically by the rotary motion of the shaft or flywheel of the engine through gears or cams or by the suction of the engine as in the operation of a pneumatic windshield wiper. It can be controlled electrically either by an electromagnet or by an electric motor supplied with electric current from either the engine battery or generator through a switch which could be opened or closed by the operator. The end 6 of the siphon tube 2 is kept embedded axially in the centre of the upper end of a wick 9 which fills the entire length of the evaporator tube 10. A tubular mesh wire 11 lines the entire length of the evaporator tube 10 in between the tube and the wick 9. The upper end of the tubular mesh wire 11 is open while its lower end is closed with wire mesh also or metal sheet with numerous small holes to allow fuel and air to pass through. The tubular mesh wire 11 could be replaced by thin sheet metal tube with perforations. A modified wick device comprising multiple capillary holes 23 is described in detail with reference to Fig. 3. The lower end of the evaporator tube 10 is supported by a baffle plate 15 which contains air holes 16. The lower end of the tube 10 carries primary air tubes 13. In order to secure a fine adjustment of the air/ fuel ratio one of the air holes 16 and the open end of one of the primary air tubes 13 are made variable in size by the use of needle valves (not shown). A small gasoline tank 19 is provided for starting the engine when a heavier liquid fuel such as kerosene or diesel oil is used in the tank 1. It is stated that gasoline or alcohol may be used in the vaporizer.
