Abstract

Acetic acid is prepared from methanol and carbon monoxide and adipic acid from butane diol or tetrahydrofuran, carbon monoxide and water by a catalytic carbonylation carried out at elevated temperature in a reactor the metal or metal alloy walls of which are provided on the inner sides with acid-resistant heat insulating linings which permit access of the reactants to the walls, the latter being externally cooled (see Group III). Continuous processes are described effected under pressure using a mixture of nickel carbonyl and nickel iodide as catalyst.ALSO:<PICT:0878254/III/1> In a chemical reactor a brick acid proof lining limits contact of the reaction material with the reactors metal surface and thermally insulates the inner wall of the reactor from the very hot reaction mass but a space is left between brick and metal to allow some penetration of liquid and thus equalisation of pressures on the two sides of the lining. A reaction column consists mainly of a pressure metal tube 21, a lower closing flange 22 and an upper closing flange 23. The reactants are introduced through pipe 24 and the reaction products are withdrawn through pipe 25. The inner protection of the reaction column is obtained by means of an inner lining, adhering to the inner wall of the metal tube and consisting of refractory bricks 26 mounted by fitting them in each other. The protection of the lower and upper closing flanges is obtained by means of two sheets 27 and 28, made of the same insulating material, shaped as it appears from Fig. 2. The metal tube is surrounded by jacket 9, in the hollow space between jacket 9 and tube 21 a cooling fluid is circulated, introduced through 10 and removed through 11. The outer cooling of both flanges 22 and 23 is assured by circulating the same cooling fluid in two coils 12 and 13 welded on the outer wall of said flanges. The metal tube 21 and flanges 22 and 23 are entirely made of a Ni/Mo alloy or of titanium or are made of steel and lined inside with a thin thickness of alloy or titanium.
