Abstract

877,972. Punching machines. ALLERS ETABLISSEMENT A.S., CARL. Nov. 20, 1957, No. 36233/57. Class 31 (2). [Also in Groups XV, XVI and XX] In the production of printed matter comprising separate items of text matter consisting variously of one or more lines, a separate card is used for each item with the line or the first line located at a constant distance from one edge of the card and of a height measured from that edge which is a fixed amount greater than the height of the items on that card and the cards are formed with cardlocating surfaces which are spaced from the above-mentioned edge by an amount which is constant for all of the cards, whereby, when the cards are assembled with the other edges of the cards located by the locating surface of the adjacent card, the separate items on the various cards are set up in uniform spacing to form an original to be produced. As shown in Fig. 7, a sheet of stiff paper 10 having feed perforations 12 (see Fig. 1, not shown), has text matter typed on it at 16 with a constant spacing "a" between successive text items by means of a typewriter having marginal sprocket teeth and a perforation 20 is punched in one margin at the first line of each text portion by a keyoperated punch in a stationary roller adjacent the typewriter platen. The typed sheet 10 is fed backwards by sprocket wheels 86, 92 through a punching machine, Fig. 4, having a die 76 and knife 80 on a vertically guided plate 72 controlled by eccentrics 58 on a driven shaft 60 which through a friction clutch chaindrives the sprocket wheels 86, 92. When one of the perforations 20, or its optical equivalent, e.g. a black dot, passes between a photocell 134 and a lamp 140, the resulting increase in current through solenoid 126, Fig. 6, causes the pin 120 on the armature to engage in one of the holes 118 in a wheel 116 on the shaft of the sprocket wheel 86, thus stopping the feed of the sheet 10. Continued rotation of the shaft 60 causes the die 76 and knife 80 to punch slots 154 forming flaps 168 having their bases at a distance b from the top of the card section and to produce a cut 156, and thereafter breaks the solenoid circuit due to cam 150 on the shaft operating the switch 136, so that the sheet feed restarts. The sheet then passes under a pair of rotary cutters 158 which trim off the margins of the sheet along the line of the perforations 14, the cards so formed passing down the shoot 174 while the separated margin passes over the sprocket wheel 92. The cards are then assembled on a central rail 166, Fig. 9, having marginal flanges 172 behind which the flaps 168 engage, the bottom edge of the next card behind located by the portion of the flap attached to the body of the front card in line with the bottom of the slots 154, and the semicircular notches 164 formed by cutting through the perforations 14 assist in the locating of the cards on each rail and in aligning sets of cards on different rails.
