Abstract

1,216,808. Perforating and tearing. ADDRESSOGRAPH MULTIGRAPH CORP. 17 June, 1969 [18 June, 1968], No. 30690/69. Heading B4B. [Also in Division B8] A machine for dividing a sheet 12 into a number of unit portions, e.g. printed address labels 15, comprises means 17 for feeding the sheet past perforating wheels thereby forming rows of perforations, a blade 20 for severing the sheet into strips and means 55, 56, 66, 68 for applying a tension to-the strip so as to sever the strip at a line of weakness thereby separating a label therefrom. The sheet is fed through the machine by means of pin-wheels 17 mounted on a rotary shaft 18 and engaging with holes 16 in the edges of the sheet. After the sheet is guided the perforated edges are removed by disc cutters 19. The disc cutters and perforating wheels for forming lines of weakness in the sheet are mounted on a shaft supported by arms 37 pivoted on a shaft 38, the arms being urged downwardly by means of springs 41 so as to cause the perforator wheels and cutters to engage with an anvil on the shaft 18; the wheels and cutters are maintained in this position against the action of the springs 41 by means of a latch (43, Fig. 4). The blade 20 is mounted on levers 21, Fig. 3, secured to a pivotable shaft 22, the levers being moved downwardly so that the blade effects a cutting stroke by means of cams 26 engaging with followers 27 on the levers. The blade is returned by means of cams 25 cooperating with followers on levers 23. The severed strip is fed by means of co-operating rollers 52, 54, Fig. 5, into the nip of rollers 55, 56, the roller 55 having a pad surface (59, 60, Fig. 8) which is adjustable to suit labels of different lengths. The end of the strip is fed by the latter rollers into the nip of a second pair of rollers 65, 68 which rotate at a faster speed than the first pair. The roller 65 has a pad surface 66 provided with suction holes so that after a label has been severed from the strip at a line of weakness it is carried by the pad and transferred therefrom to a suction pad 72 on a roller 71. The pad 72 carries the label past a glue applicator wheel 75 and is then pressed by the pad 72 on to an article, e.g. a magazine, as the latter passes along a table under the wheel. In a modification, the pad 72 may be provided with heating devices which will enable the pad to heat and soften reverse printing on the back of the label or unit portion and cause the units to act as printing masters instead of applied labels.
