[Also in Group XXII] A method of manufacturing a large metal container of ovoid or spherical shape comprises the steps of forming an inner shell and superposing a series of outer layers thereon, each layer being formed from a plurality of quadrangular plates, placed edge to edge and applied to the shell or to the preceding layer under pressure and securing the plates in this position by welding. The wall of the container may be constituted by the assembly of panels A (Fig. 2), each formed by superposing a number of metal sheets 4 welded together at 5. Alternatively there may be a number of staggered welds 6 (Fig. 3). In a further modification autogenous welding 8 (Fig. 5), may be used. The metal sheets 4 may be pressed into engagement with one another during assembly either by mechanical action or by establishing a complete or partial vacuum in the interspaces between the sheets. As shown in Fig. 6, the edge 9<SP>1</SP> of the plates 9 of each layer may be applied to an inside shell 10 by inserting wedges 11 between the edges 91 and stops 12 that are fixed to the shell. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 8, the sheets 9 may be pressed against the shell 10 by threading them on screw-threaded rods 13 fixed to the inside sphere, nuts 14 being screwed on the rods. The holes 15 in the sheets 9 are larger in diameter than the rods 13 to leave a clearance which can be used for obtaining a partial vacuum. The holes 15 may be stopped up tightly by welding nuts 14 on the rods 13 and on to the outer surface of the wall. Alternatively, the holes 15 may be filled by welding as the different layers are put in place.
