Abstract

877,370. Reactor control rods; radiation absorbing materials. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. Jan 6, 1960 [Jan. 9, 1959], No. 461/60. Class 39(4). [Also in Group XXII] A plate having a high neutron absorption is made by making holes in a metal strip, filling the holes with material of high neutron captive cross-section and rolling the strip so that the holes and their contents have an elongated cross-sectional shape as shown in the Figure. Several such plates may be joined to form a cruciform control rod. Several rows of holes may be made so that the neutron absorbing parts overlap after rolling, forming a plate suitable for neutron shielding, Fig. 6, not shown. The plate may be of stainless steel, carbon steel or Al, containing B, Cd, Hf or their compounds. Gaseous products of neutron absorption are absorbed or released by using a porous metal strip or porous closures for the holes or by putting porous material in the ends of the holes before the holes are sealed.
