Abstract

877,123. Accelerometer circuit. FERRANTI Ltd. Nov. 3, 1959 [Nov. 4, 1958], No. 35302/58. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XL (c)] The output of a piezo-electric or electrostatic shock accelerometer is passed to an amplifier having a network arranged to provide during each pulse (square or triangular) from the transducer an exponentially-decreasing negative feedback of waveform such as to compensate for the distortion of the input waveform caused by the inherent capacitances and resistances of the transducer and its connections and the input resistance of the amplifier. In Fig. 2 the signal from a piezo-electric transducer 1 is passed through a cathode-follower 2 to the input grid 3 of a cascade amplifier. Due to the time-constants of the circuits the top of the pulse (assumed square) would droop, but this tendency is counteracted by feeding back to the upper grid through a capacitor 10 and resistor 11 a voltage which is large at the commencement of the pulse and falls off exponentially. The net anode waveform is the difference between the cathode and grid waveforms of valve 5, and can be arranged to be flat-topped. If the input is of saw-tooth form the feedback circuit prevents the top from being rounded off. The cascade circuit can be replaced by a cathode-coupled amplifier, Fig. 4 (not shown).
