Abstract

Vinyl chloride polymers having a relatively low degree of polymerization are produced by a process comprising polymerizing monomeric vinyl chloride in the presence of a liquid vinyl chloride polymer. The vinyl chloride polymer may be a homopolymer or a copolymer of at least 50% wt. vinyl chloride with a monoolefinic comonomer, e.g. the other vinyl halides; vinylidene halides; vinyl acetate, stearate or benzoate; acrylic acid and its derivatives such as methyl acrylate, acrylamide and acrylonitrile; vinyl aromatics such as styrene and chlorostyrene; and alkyl esters of maleic and fumaric acids. The term "liquid polymer" refers to such polymers which are liquid at room temperature and have a polymerization degree between 8 and 20 according to ASTM D1243-58T. Such liquid polymers may be prepared by polymerizing the monomer(s) in the presence of a chain transfer agent, such as halomethanes or thioglycol. Any conventional polymerization process may be used in the invention, e.g. bulk, solution, suspension or emulsion. Catalysts mentioned are benzoyl, lauryl and hydrogen peroxides; potassium and ammonium persulphates; azo-bis-isobutyronitrile; and dimethyl valeronitrile. Suitable suspension media are polyvinyl alcohol, methyl cellulose, gelatin, bentonite and talc; anionic or non-ionic surface active agents may be used as emulsifiers. Examples illustrate the preparation of liquid polyvinyl chloride and vinyl chloride/acetate copolymer using carbon tetrachloride as chain stopper and the use thereof and of liquid copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl stearate or methyl acrylate in the polymerization of vinyl chloride alone and also with vinyl acetate (90%); vinyl stearate (10%); methyl acrylate (10%); and vinyl lauryl ether. n-Hexane was used as solvent in one example. Stabilizers, e.g. dibutyl tin maleate; calcium, barium or cadmium stearate; white lead or litharge may be added before or after polymerization.
