Abstract
The invention comprises 17a -acetyl-D 1,4-androstadiene - 11b ,17b - diol-3-one and 17a -methyl - D 1,4 - D-homo-androstadiene-11b ,17b -diol-3,17(a)-dione, and the preparation thereof by submitting 17a -ethinyl-D 1,4-androstadiene-11b ,17b -diol-3-one to hydration in the presence of an organic mercury derivative as catalyst e.g. a mercury salt of p-toluenesulphonamide, to prepare the former compound, and heating this compound to form the D-homo compound. The above hydration step may be carried out by heating to boiling in an alcoholic solution. A detailed example is given. Specification 788,895 is referred to.
