Abstract
876,847. Driving magnetic tapes. EPSYLON RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. Oct. 20, 1958 [Nov. 15, 1957], No. 35714/57. Class 40 (2). A capstan 1 has a pinch-roller 2 pressed against it to feed the tape and they are slightly separated to allow free passage of the tape but at all times, both rollers are geared to rotate together by gears 8, 9. Due to the gear-tooth form, roller 2 will have a small phase lag on capstan 1 when separated from it compared with when in the drive position, so that the action of engaging the tape drive will require acceleration by the roller 2 to remove this lag. To avoid the consequent delay in the initiation of tape drive at playing speed, the gear 9 is driven from the capstan 1 by frictional means 10, adjusted by the locking rings 11. Slipping occurs on drive engagement, obviating the acceleration. The members 9, 10 may be combined in one member of, e.g. PTFE, while the gear 8 and the arrangement 9, 10, 11 may be interchanged on the capstan 1 and the roller 2.
