Abstract

Discolouration in polymers, e.g. natural rubber, polymers and copolymers from conjugated dienes, is inhibited by incorporating in the polymer before vulcanization up to 5%, preferably 0,05%-2%, by weight of the polymer, of an amino compound of the formula NRR1X where X is CN or CONR2R3, R stands for hydrogen, an alkyl group, or an alkylene group attached directly or through an oxygen atom to R1, R1 stands for an alkyl group, or an alkylene group attached either directly or through an oxygen atom to R, or directly to R2, R2 stands for a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, or an alkylene group attached to R1, or R3, and R3 stands for a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, or an alkylene group attached to R2. Specified compounds include tertiary butyl urea, tertiary octyl urea, ethylene urea, N : N1-bis tertiary butyl urea, tertiary octyl cyanamide, tetraisopropyl urea, isoamyl urea, N : N1-cyclohexamethylene urea, N-carbamyl morpholine, N-carbamyl piperidine, those compounds whose alkyl groups together contain at least 3 and not more than 12 carbon atoms being preferred. The polymer or copolymer compositions may include other conventional additives and compounding ingredients, e.g. vulcanizing agents, accelerators &c.
