Abstract
<PICT:0876707/III/1> <PICT:0876707/III/2> An ion-exchange apparatus comprising a plurality of compartments bounded by ion-selective membranes, has conduits whereby at least two ionic liquids can each be supplied to some of the compartments, and connections by which one at least of the liquids may be divided into parallel sub-streams each of which flows in series through a number of the compartments. As described for an electrodiolytic apparatus, (see Group XXXVI), the membranes are separated by peripheral spacers 21, Fig. 5, clamped by bolts 14 between end plates 10. One liquid, e.g. that to be desalted, is divided into three sub-streams which each enter the apparatus by a hole 27, the second, undivided, liquid entering at 38, the holes 27, 38 leading to co-operating holes 22 in the spacers 21 and membranes. Inserts 24 in appropriate positions ensure the passage of the undivided, concentrated liquid through alternate compartments, and the passage of each desalted sub-stream through every sixth compartment.
