Abstract

Particulate urea having improved free-flowing properties and improved resistance to caking is prepared by adding to particulate urea a minor quantity of a substituted urea of the formula R1R2N.CO.NH2, in which R1 is a monovalent organic group and R2 is hydrogen or a monovalent organic group, or a minor quantity of a compound which is known to react with the particulate urea at the temperature employed to produce the above substituted urea in situ. The substituted urea may be added in quantities ranging from 0.0001% to 0.5% by weight of the particulate urea, the latter being in crystalline, granular or pellet form. The substituted urea may also be added during a drying stage of a process for preparing particulate urea from a melt or concentrated solution. The R1 and/or R2 substituents of the substituted urea may represent alkyl, cycloalkyl, heterocyclic (e.g. pyridyl) and substituted or unsubstituted aryl radicals, exemplified aryl substituents being halogens and alkoxy, alkyl, amino, hydroxy, nitro, carboxyl and acylamino groups. Substances producing the substituted urea in situ are preferably amines of the formula R1R2NH. Amines exemplified for such a purpose are ortho- and paratoluidine, para-anisidine, para-phenetidine, As-dimethyl-para-phenylene-diamine, As-diethylparaphenylenediamine, 2,4- xylidine, para-aminodiphenyl, sulphanilic acid, para-nitroaniline, para-bromoaniline, aniline, para-phenylenediamine, 2- amino -4- nitroluene, paraaminodiphenylamine, 4- aminophthalic acid, benzidine, diphenylamine, phenacetine, phenylhydrazine and 1-aminoanthraquinone.
