Abstract

The invention comprises disazo dyestuffs free from acid groups imparting solubility in water and of formula:- A-N=N-B-N=N-C-OH wherein A is a benzene residue having a nitro group in ortho-, or preferably meta-, position to the azo group, B is a benzene residue and C is a benzene residue with the hydroxyl group para to the azo group. The preferred dyestuffs are substituted in A and B only by halogen atoms or alkyl or alkoxy groups. They are prepared by coupling a para-coupling phenol with a diazotized aminoazo dyestuff of formula:- A-N=N-B-NH2 wherein A and B are as defined above. The dyestuffs may be used to dye or print cellulose esters or ethers, polyamides, polyurethanes, polyvinyl chloride or preferably polyesters such as polyethylene terephthalate in scarlet to orange shades. In examples the dyestuffs 4-amino- 2-methyl-5-methoxy- 31- or -2-nitro-1 : 11-azobenzene or 4-amino-2 : 5-dimethyl-31-nitro-1 : 11-azobenzene --> phenol and 4-amino-2-methyl-5-methoxy-31-nitro-1 : 11 azobenzene --> o- or m-cresol are prepared.
